Pilot Study for MLD Newborn Screening Launches in Washington State

A team led by University of Washington biochemist Dr. Michael Gelb (pictured here) and including the MLD Foundation's Teryn and Dean Suhr, launched a pilot study for MLD newborn screening in the state of Washington based on findings first published in the journal Clinical Chemistry. The incidence of metachromatic leukodystrophy, or MLD is not well understood. It is estimated to affect 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 160,000 births, but historically it has been poorly diagnosed because its symptoms mirror more common diseases, such as cerebral palsy. Bala House Montessori School hosts annual lemonade stand for children with leukodystrophy

For Earth Day, kindergartners at the Bala House Montessori School hosted their third annual lemonade stand fundraiser to benefit Cal's foundation, the children, many of whom were Cal's classmates from the school's 2 year olds playgroup, all pitched in and raised $100 to help children and families affected by leukodystrophy. Each year, as part of the event, teachers read the book "Cal's Disease" which offers a beautiful lesson how a community can come together and make a difference in the lives of others.

Origin + Ash hosts ceramic artist Erika DeBoever and raises $2000

On Saturday, May 7th, Bunny and TR Risk hosted the Nature of Art Show at Origin + Ash in Bryn Mawr, PA where local ceramic artist Erika De Boever showcased a collection of porcelain "greenware." Ms. De Boever and the Risks donated all proceeds from the sales to Cal's Foundation. With a matching gift from Glaxo Smith Kline, where Ms. De Boever works as a researcher, the gift to Cal's foundation will be $2000. Husband and wife owners Bunny and TR Risk opened the shop in 1997. TR Risk builds handmade furniture made from reclaimed lumber and vintage hardware. Bunny Risk is a designer and mosaic artist.
